Top 3 Eats: Auckland

I’d consider myself a bit of a foodie. During the semester, I try to eat as clean as possible (that means no cheese and wine!), but when I’m on holiday I love exploring new places to wine and dine with my loved ones. I recently returned from a week in Auckland, New Zealand (my hometown) and wanted to share some of my special food experiences from when I was in town. Having been a local for most of my life, I thought I knew a lot about Auckland dining, but every time I return I’m introduced to some really cool spots.

#1: Little Jimmy in Epsom

I went here with my boyfriend’s family for his 21st birthday dinner, and I have to say, I think this was up there with the greatest meals of my life. Instead of choosing from the menu, we opted to “Trust the Chef”, in which the chef brought out five seriously insane courses that they personally loved in a cohesive menu. I think the thing I loved most about this was the sheer adventurousness that comes with not knowing what you’re getting next. It’s a fun night out, and if you ever get the option to do this at any restaurant I highly recommend it.

#2 Goldie Estate on Waiheke Island

If you pop over to Waiheke on the 30-minute ferry, you can experience the magic that is Goldie Estate. Goldie is an esteemed vineyard, but also hosts a deli in which you can have the chef prepare a picnic basket of cheese, meat, salads, and other nibbly things that you can take into the vineyard to enjoy. I also highly recommend taking a bottle of their gorgeous 2015 pinot gris with you.

#3 The Burbs Eatery in Farm Cove

The Burbs is definitely among my favourite unheard of spots in the Auckland area, and luckily for me, right down the road from where I was staying. I was a little disappointed to say the least when I found out my fave menu item has recently become a weekend exclusive (we went on a Tuesday), so I had to settle for the salmon bagel (which was also awesome). Of course though, this just meant that another trip was necessary over the weekend to indulge in their version of eggs bene – served on potato hash and wilted spinach. A flat white is the perfect accompaniment and together, The Burbs provides the ultimate hangover cure.

If you ever get the chance to do Auckland, please try out one of these spots and let me know if you loved them as much as I do.
